Bosjes Restaurant - Part 1

This blog is best viewed in Google Chrome.

There's this cool new restaurant near Ceres in the Western Cape named Bosjes Kombuis. "Bosjes" is Dutch and means "small bushes." "Kombuis" is Dutch and Afrikaans for "kitchen." The former South African Master Chef judge, Pete Goffe-Wood, is in charge of the menu. The restaurant opened in March.

We shared two appetisers, the fish cake and charcuterie with liver pâté. I am not a huge fan of liver pâté, but this was exceptional. Our only complaint about the charcuterie was that there wasn't enough bread to eat more of it. The bread was divine and we did get seconds, but even that wasn't enough. The fish cake was amazing. If I did it over again, I would order the fish cake starter and a salad and forgo the main. It was really that good.

Another new thing that I was introduced to recently was the all-in-one free online photo editor, FotoJet. I have been trying it out and finding it very user-friendly. It has an easy Home Page lay-out. The options available are clearly displayed: Graphic Design, Photo Collage, and Photo Editing. Make sure to scroll down the Home Page to see them all. I tried the free version with plenty of editing tools and graphic designs to choose from. There is also a paid version called FotoJet Plus that gives you more options with no ads.

I used FotoJet for the collage and the "Bosjes" text. I also used FotoJet for photo editing. I used the Featured Effects under Edit Photo. I usually went with Scenery. On one photo I chose to use Portrait (the group photo) and another one Vintage 1 (the wall with "Bosjes Kombuis" written on it). I added a frame on the very last photo. There are lots of neat frame options to choose from too!

A Day in Cape Town - Part 1

A Day in Cape Town - Part 1

St. George's Mall on
St. George's Street

Samantha planned a family outing to Cape Town before her 16th birthday. The day we left, she was helping her dad paint her bedroom, so her day was very full. I went with an inflamed ligament in my foot, but all the walking that we did was close by in the city center.

Samantha and Jessica bought matching dresses at the market on St. George's Mall. We also saw a live African performance of female dancers and singers.

Greenmarket Square on
Longmarket Street

At Greenmarket Square we checked out the stalls and African curious for sale. It's a historical square built in 1696 and declared a national monument in 1961. The distinctive cobblestones were laid in 1965 and there are interesting buildings surrounding the square from different eras.

Central Methodist Mission
on Longmarket Street

We were interested to see inside the Central Methodist Mission when we saw a sign inviting us in for coffee and croissants. Amanda had a hot chocolate, Samantha and I had cappuccinos, and Jessica and Robbie had regular coffees. We were really impressed with the croissants and carrot cake. I tasted both and they were top notch!

St. George's Cathedral
on Wale Street

From Longmarket Street we walked to Wale Street and had a peek inside St. George's Cathedral. My kids haven't been to Europe where there are plenty of beautiful churches, so seeing two in one day was neat. It was dark inside, so my photos didn't turn out that nicely, but they still give a good idea of what we saw.

Check back next Tuesday
for Part 2 with photos of
the Dutch East India
Company's Gardens
begun in 1652!

Angala Boutique Hotel Franschhoek

On our last day in Franschhoek, we popped in at Angala. My mother-in-law works there part-time in a managerial role and she wanted to show us the new pools that were being put in. Since the pools were still under construction, I didn't take any photos of them, but I did take a couple of photos of the proteas and a neat faucet fountain that seems to float in thin air. The scenery shot above was taken while we were driving on the private farm road to Angala. I'm also including some photos of a post that I did about a year ago during an art workshop weekend at this 5-star boutique hotel.

The Gardens at Angala

Just over a year ago, Samantha and I were treated to a fabulous art workshop weekend at Angala. Today I'm sharing my favorite photos of that weekend with you.

The Views at Angala

Samantha and I enjoyed our morning walks. We had vineyards on one side and forestry on the other, with mountains all around us.

The Art Workshop at Angala

Samantha and I participated in a fun and informative art workshop weekend at Angala. Leonie E. Brown was our instructor. Samantha painted a child portrait of herself and I did a landscape from one of my photos.

Our En Suite Bedroom at Angala

We took early morning showers outside and, surprisingly, we didn't feel the chill in the air under the warm water. We also loved everything about our room, including making coffee and tea in the mornings and evenings.

The Restaurant and Staff at Angala

I saved the best for last. Although, I have to admit, it's almost impossible to beat the idyllic setting with Angala's gorgeous views. But, the excellent care we received at Angala made it that much more enjoyable. The photos speak for themselves.

Thank you to the owners, the staff and my
mother-in-law for a wonderful weekend!
