The Scratch Patch in Simon's Town

We love visiting The Scratch Patch in Simon's Town. Our kids were shopping for Christmas presents one year and spent half the day at their two shops choosing gifts. There are a variety of items to choose from, ranging from affordable to expensive. The kids chose well with the money they had, even chipping in together to buy their American grandparents the perfect souvenir. These photos are from that day. For some reason, only Amanda is in these pics.

Simon's Town, Cape Town

One of the prettiest fishing towns and home to the South African Navy is Simon's Town in Cape Town. We've taken our kids several times and twice we've eaten fish and chips at the Salty Sea Dog. On this trip we were with my mom and stepdad. These photos were taken about two years ago, but I just never got around to sharing them. I've also included links to previous posts that I've done on Simon's Town that are worth taking a look.

If you visit Simon's Town, one site that you won't want to miss is the statue of Just Nuisance. He was a Great Dane during World War II and the only canine member of the Royal Navy. He was first enlisted as a volunteer with the rank of Ordinary Seaman. Not long after, he was promoted to Able Seaman, which meant he was entitled to naval rations. Even though he never went to sea, he was issued his own bunk, a sailor's cap, and a special collar that held his free train pass. A sailor was also put in charge of him to make sure he was fed, bathed, and brushed regularly. Upon his death, he was laid to rest with full military honors. Even more surprisingly was that, even though the Royal Navy was heavily engaged in fighting a war at the time, an announcement of his death was sent to every naval ship and establishment worldwide. Naval Museum, Simon's Town

There are lots of neat things to see and do in Simon's Town. It's not far from Cape Town and it's certainly worth a visit. Today's photos were taken at the South African Naval Museum. I did a previous series on this town with more things of interest and those links are included at the bottom of this post. Be sure to check them out!

Simon's Town - Part 3

SA Naval Museum

The SAS Assegaai - S99 is one of three French submarines acquired between 1970 - 1972. These were the first submarines to serve in the South African Navy. The SAS Assegaai (assegaai is the Afrikaans word for 'spear') was finally decommissioned in 2003. Currently, she is preserved as a floating museum. (The link that I included above is a bit outdated, but the page has good photos and information.)

Our tour guide, Malcolm, had been one of the chefs on board the submarine. He mentioned that food was the main thing that helped break up the monotony of days under water and so a lot was expected of the chef on duty - and the kitchen was tiny! Two chefs worked shifts - while one was on, the other was off - from 4 am to midnight every day. Malcolm was really funny and explained life on the submarine very well.
