Naval Museum, Simon's Town

There are lots of neat things to see and do in Simon's Town. It's not far from Cape Town and it's certainly worth a visit. Today's photos were taken at the South African Naval Museum. I did a previous series on this town with more things of interest and those links are included at the bottom of this post. Be sure to check them out!

Prosperous Journey:

The fog is torn,
The sky is bright,
And Aeolus releases
The fearful bindings.
The winds whisper,
The sailor begins to move.
Swiftly! Swiftly!
The waves divide,
The distance nears;
Already, I see land!

Glückliche Fahrt:

Die Nebel zerreißen,
Der Himmel ist helle,
Und Äolus löset
Das ängstliche Band.
Es säuseln die Winde,
Es rührt sich der Schiffer.
Geschwinde! Geschwinde!
Es teilt sich die Welle,
Es naht sich die Ferne;
Schon seh ich das Land!

Ludwig van Beethoven

Johann Wolfgang von Goethe ~

Kanonkop Estate

The day we visited the beautiful Kanonkop Estate was not for wine tasting, but for a Christian camp for disadvantaged youth. We were guest speakers for the afternoon and evening sessions.

The road to the campsite is on the Kanonkop property. The estate's name literally means "canon head" and refers to the canon that used to sit on the hillock on the lower slopes of the Simonsberg Mountain in the Stellenbosch Region of the Cape. During the 17th Century, the canon was fired every time a ship was spotted sailing into Table Bay. Farmers would load up their wagons and make the trip to the bay to trade and sell their goods. You can see the hillock clearly, to the left of the mountain peaks, in the photo below.

The Spice Route

If you have been following my travel photography blog, then you might think that I am always doing neat things like today's post. In reality, Hubby and I rarely go out on a date. And when we do, we spend our money carefully and try to make it stretch.

In December of 2015, we were invited to speak at a Christian youth camp between Paarl and Stellenbosch. After my afternoon session and before Hubby's evening session, we had a 2-hour gap of free time. We decided to go for a drive and popped in at the Spice Route in Paarl for dinner.

We arrived when things were closing like the wine tasting, the craft beer tasting and the chocolate tasting, which draw lots of South Africans and tourists alike. We didn't mind, because we didn't have a lot of time. Besides, the views and our meal were a big enough treat for us! We shared a delicious pizza at La Grapperia. Hubby's beverage of choice was a craft beer by CBC and mine was a Fynbos Gin by Wilderer with Tonic, ice, a slice of cucumber and a garnish of fresh mint.

Check out all the neat photos and be sure to click on them to see them at their best! The last two pictures include some vibrant glass sculptures from Red Hot Glass, also showcased at Paarl's Spice Route. There really are lots of things to see and do here, but most of it in the daytime. Kids are also welcome.

Wildflowers and Horses

Since our laptop was stolen and all of my photos are backed up in one big Google Photos pool, which I still need to sift through, I decided to re-blog an old post. I took these photos in August 2013. We were on a road about 10 minutes from our home outside of Fairy Glen Private Game Reserve, near the Brandwacht mountains. It was springtime in South Africa and the colorful wildflowers were in bloom. I was especially delighted to spot the horses and foal. The sun was shining low enough to add extra effect.
