Lunch at Calabash

When we heard my in-laws were coming through with the idea of going to a cool pizza place with us, one of the places that came to mind was the Calabash Bush Pub on Bain's Kloof Pass. We had been in 2012. It is surrounded by mountains and vineyards and their pizzas are thin-based. We knew then that it was the kind of pizza restaurant that my father-in-law would enjoy. I couldn't believe that the last time we went was four years ago! It was a good choice, because everyone had a great time.

Hiking in the Mountains

Today I'm veering off from my typical Tuesday travel post. I'm sharing photos from someone else's adventure and not my own, because my daughter, Samantha, went on the adventure too. In August, Samantha was invited to join the hiking club on a 7 km hike up the mountains near our home. She stayed overnight in a stone cottage. They got there just in time before the weather changed. Strong winds and rain buffeted the cottage throughout the night. I think it was quite an experience! Of course, I felt like an irresponsible parent listening to the storm while safe in my bed.

All the photos were taken by Paul Richardson, the friend who invited Samantha, except for the group photo. In the group photo, she is the one in front on the right and he is the one in the middle with a grey jacket. She's also in the last shot, where you see her from behind, as they are heading back down the mountain.

Goudini Spa, Rawsonville

Goudini Spa

Hot Mineral Springs
Warm-water Pools

Heißen Mineralquellen
Warmwasser-Pools

We did so many things in 2015 that I never shared about our stay at Goudini Spa in Rawsonville. It was Autumn and the surrounding vineyards were different shades of yellows, reds, and greens. Goudini Spa has natural hot springs rich with minerals, which flow into outdoor and indoor pools. There's also a fun water-slide for the more adventurous.

Four of us stayed for one night in one of the rondavels, a traditional circular African hut with a thatched roof. Goudini offers a variety of accommodation from camping sites to luxury villas with a four-star rating. The rondavels are very basic with 2-star and 3-star ratings. Each rondavel comes with an outdoor braai (barbecue). We barbecued the night we stayed there after having been to the indoor warm-water pool.

Springfield Wine Estate

A couple of weekends ago we were in Robertson for school sports. We had time on our hands between Amanda's two netball games and so we went wine tasting. We were recently introduced to Springfield's wines by a friend who gave us two bottles of their reds. He told us it was his favorite wine in Robertson and that the estate was worth a visit.

We are so glad that we popped in on that cold morning. The sun came out over the valley and inside the wine tasting room a fire was blazing. We were very impressed with everything and would highly recommend it to anyone. There are lots of interesting tidbits for me to share, so keep on reading!

As we drove into the estate, Felix, the Anatolian Shepherd greeted us. Actually, Amanda greeted him. He just lay there and allowed us to pet him. We also took a peek at his name tag. I later found the Springfield blog and learned that Felix has an important role at the estate. He guards his owners' herd of Springbok at night from wild animals.

Wine tasting at Springfield was a real treat. We could walk around and take in the views with wine in hand. Springfield Estate produces boutique wines using traditional wine-making methods. The present generation of winemakers is a brother-sister team, Abrie and Jeanette Bruwer. Most of their wines are fermented using natural wild yeasts found on the grape skins. This is a high-risk way of making wine and sometimes means losing an entire vintage, but they are willing to take that risk to produce exceptional wines.
