Karoo Desert Botanical Garden

I took Amanda and a friend of hers to our Botanical Gardens late one afternoon as the sun was beginning to set. The girls loved it. They ran around for about two hours. Amanda knows the paths pretty well. We have such an amazing variety of plants and, if you look closely, I even managed to capture two types of birds in the aloe.

Recently, I let her lead a group of friends on nearby paths while I hid snacks and juice boxes on other paths in and near the little maze. I made sure to count how many items I put down, so that we wouldn't leave anything behind. That was another outing and I shared those photos on Halloween in SA.

Tok-Tokkie Beetle
The name “tok-tokkie” is onomatopoeic and refers to the sound these beetles make when they tap their abdomen on the ground. They are flightless beetles.

Kokerboom / Quiver Tree

The trees are called Kokerboom in Afrikaans and Quiver Tree in English. The bushmen (San people) used the branches to make a quiver (koker) for their arrows.

A Day in Cape Town - Part 3

A Day in Cape Town - Part 3

There's a lot to see and do on foot in the center of Cape Town. We spent most of our family outing walking and it was fairly easy walking too.  We had coffee and hot-chocolate with carrot cake and croissants at the Central Methodist Mission in the afternoon and in the evening we had a light dinner at Minato. We ended our evening with a drive up to Signal Hill where we could see the city lights and the Waterfront below. Be sure to check out Part 1 and Part 2 if you missed them!

Minato

We ate sushi and a selection of dim sum at a little restaurant called Minato, which is tucked away just off of Long Street in Cape Town. The food was good, the service was super friendly, and the prices were fair.

We passed Slice Pizza on our way to Minato and enjoyed watching this guy at work drawing a mural. His name is Albert Matilya and he's studying Civil Engineering at the University of Cape Town (UCT). Albert was kind enough to share about his work and showed us his album. If you want to learn more about him, I've included links below.

A Day in Cape Town - Part 2

A Day in Cape Town - Part 2

The Company's Garden
in Queen Victoria Street

Today is my 300th post on 1camera1mom! I've really enjoyed sharing my travels in photographs on this blog and I hope you will keep coming back for more!

The Company's Garden is a park and heritage site in the center of Cape Town. It was begun in 1652 with the first piece of land being planted with a fruit and vegetable garden.

Inside the garden today is a variety of trees, plants, flowers, and birds. People visiting the garden can be seen feeding the squirrels, which the birds take advantage of. There are also several memorials as well as museums and art galleries. Table Mountain can easily be seen from here too.

Check back next Tuesday
for the end of the series,
with more interesting photos
of Cape Town in Part 3!
