Our family went to Simon's Town one Sunday during the winter holiday. In case you didn't know, South Africa experiences winter during the months of June, July and August. Simon's Town is a great place to visit during winter as it is one of the few sea-side towns sheltered from the strong north-west winter winds. We did so much in one morning and afternoon that I created a three-part series. Make sure you check out Part 1, if you missed it!

It really makes a difference!

Last weekend we visited Simon's Town, a sea-side town near Cape Town. Jeremiah arrived with the train a few days earlier in Kalk Bay, which is close by, and was staying with a friend. He had the pleasure of seeing the view from the train, which runs alongside the water.

We made a quick detour to pick up Jessica, who was staying with her grandma at Angala. Jessica was job shadowing her for a school project. (The kids are in the middle of their school year and it's their winter holiday, not like in the States and elsewhere.)

We continued on our way along the Pniel road to Stellenbosch. From there we drove to Cape Town, beside the water. We stopped at Kalk Bay to pick up Jeremiah and then we drove through Fish Hoek where we visited the Scratch Patch. We had a lot of fun seeing the huge variety of gemstones - polished and unpolished.

We celebrated the American 4th of July in South Africa with wood fired pizzas at Du Toitskloof Cellar in Rawsonville. They have recently added on a deli, called Melissa's Food Shop, with an outdoor pizza oven. It was our first time trying their pizza. The pizza base was a bit tough, but they were delicious. We ordered three Margaritas, one plain and two with ham. The ham ones were very flavorful and they all came with fresh rocket (arugula) on top. There were also some gourmet style topping combinations, but we stuck with simple choices, since we were sharing.

Our waitress informed us that a glass of wine was included with our food. Later we were told that refills were also for free. That certainly made our day. We have always enjoyed Du Toitskloof Wines, so please check out my wine tasting post that I did previously.
