Lunch at the Ou Meul Bakery

We met up with my mother-in-law at the Ou Meul Bakery at Du Toitskloof Wines. (Ou Meul means Old Mill.) We hadn't seen each other in ages due to lockdown. We missed Mother's Day and her birthday, so we brought gifts. It was so nice catching up in such a beautiful setting with good food. Two people couldn't be with us, our eldest son and my father-in-law.

These photos were taken with my Samsung phone and Canon PowerShot. Hubby took the two photos that include me and Jessica took the photo of her sister, Samantha. I took the rest. The ones on the drive home were taken on the fly while Hubby drove. We live in beautiful wine country. I have included links to my related posts below.

Walking Our Dogs

I appreciate being able to walk our dogs. One reason is that I used to suffer from plantar fasciitis and could hardly walk. I still have to be careful so that it doesn't flare-up. The other reason is that recently, our initial lockdown restrictions for Level 5 forbade us to leave our yards, except for groceries or medicines. We are now in Level 2 lockdown starting from midnight last night.

I also appreciate that we live so close to nature! These photos are from two different walks. The ones that feature Amanda and me were taken by my husband. The others are of my daughter Samantha. Keep safe wherever you are in the world and I hope you find time to refresh your soul with the great outdoors!

Picnic at the Rose Garden

We decided to take a drive out to Durbanville to meet up with our son, Jeremiah, for a picnic. We hadn't seen him since lockdown in mid-March. We are still on lockdown with lightened restrictions. We didn't hug and we tried to keep to the social distancing rules. It was really nice to catch up. The sisters made the food and Jeremiah brought the Krispy Kreme Doughnuts. Even though our kids are half American, something like Krispy Kreme is a novelty. Amanda said it was on her bucket list and was thrilled to finally try their donuts.

These photos were taken with my Canon PowerShot camera and my Samsung Galaxy phone. Jessica also took a couple of these photos as she walked around with my camera. We were at the Rose Garden in Durbanville, near Cape Town. It wasn't the time for roses, but we got a few pics of flowers. This is also the Schabort family burial ground and memorial on donated land by the family, which is part of the Old Eversdal Estate. Amanda and Samantha spotted a hummingbird near the gravesite. It had left by the time that I walked over there.

Wildflowers in the Western Cape

I'm excited to give you a little information on a few of the beautiful wildflowers here in the Western Cape. This is not my area of expertise, so I asked someone who knows. Werner Voigt is the manager at Kirstenbosch, Cape Town's Botanical Garden. It's a privilege to have him as a friend. Since time is valuable, I only asked him for the names of a few of the flowers that we see every day on our walks with our rescue dogs. I've organized the photos according to the flowers and not the time of day.

The first flowers are locally known as Bokhoring. It means "the horn of a buck" and is alluding to the fruit structure after flowering. Their Latin name is Microloma sagittatum. They have a milky sap that is used to treat warts.

The Latin name for the pink mauve flowers is Sutera fruticosa. They commonly grow on the foothills of the Breede Valley (our little corner of the world). I find them very pretty.

The Wild Cotton reminds me of paper quilling (filigree). Its Latin name is Gomphocarpus cancellatus.

The last flower belongs to the Hibiscus family. Its Latin name is Anisidontea triloba, referring to the three-lobed velvety leaves. The first photo of the last three photos is of one that has just begun to open.
