An Afternoon in De Doorns - Part 1

A few weeks back I did a post on a Cape Dutch home in De Doorns. At the time, I didn't have my camera with me and so the photos were all taken with my husband's phone. This time we were invited for lunch and I made sure to bring my Canon PowerShot. It's a great little camera.

Trees at the Karoo Desert Botanical Garden

Two of the most interesting trees at the Karoo Desert Botanical Garden are the Quiver Tree and the Chinese Lantern Tree. Both are indigenous to South Africa and Namibia. The Quiver Tree bark is hard, but it's soft and spongy inside. Historically, the Bushmen used these branches by hollowing them out to make quivers for their arrows. Interestingly, there is only one species of the Chinese Lantern Tree, it can survive in extreme heat, it's drought resistant, and it feeds honeybees.

Sunset in the Western Cape

Several days ago we saw the most stunning sunset from our home. The first one shows a bit of our house with Samantha sitting in the forefront. We've never seen anything like it. Once the sun went down, however, the color was sucked right out of the sky rendering it void of color with only ominous grey tones in the strange undulating carpet of clouds. It was like a snow cone once all the bright syrup had been pulled out through the straw, leaving only the flavorless crushed ice behind.

We live in the Western Cape, in beautiful wine country. Since I don't have a new series of photos, other than these of this gorgeous sunset, I've chosen a few of my nicer wine region posts and added those links below under Related Posts.

RAEL's 10th Anniversary

Photos from 2015

Our family was recently invited to attend RAEL's 10th anniversary. RAEL stands for Recovering Addicts, Empowering Lives. My husband goes twice a week to teach from the Bible and encourage the guys there. I didn't have my camera with me at the event, so the photos were taken with my husband's phone. For this reason, I'm including pictures that I took in 2015 and then the ones that we took recently. P.S. The pig in the photo is not the one on the spit!
