Visiting Velddrif - Part 2

On our second visit to Velddrif, our son came with us. It was nice having all four kids together. Now that three of them are adults, it happens less often. We spent some time at the estuary and then we drove to The School House Farm Stall (Die Skooltjie Padstal). They sell the best meat pies. We bought them frozen to eat later for dinner. My favorite is filled with bobotie (curried meat and fruit chutney). I included a photo of my pie below.

Visiting Velddrif - Part 1

Christmas time is summertime in South Africa. We almost always head to the West Coast to my in-laws. Velddrif is a fishing town along an estuary that we love to visit. Our three girls were with us on this outing. We saw the bokkoms hanging out to dry. In one of the photos is a small packet of bokkoms (dried mullet) that we shared. They are very salty. We saw flamingos flying by, but my pic of them isn't very clear.

Saint Helena Bay

Every Christmas we spend the holiday with my in-laws on South Africa's West Coast. On one of our days there, we usually buy fish and chips. The best fish and chips on the West Coast are at the BP Marine Fish Products takeaway restaurant down at the harbor in St. Helena Bay. I included a photo of our meal at the bottom. The chips look like calamari, but they are actually soft thick-cut French fries. It's a thing in South Africa. The first time I ate slap chips (soft French fries), I thought they were cooked wrong. I still prefer mine crispy.

Lighthouse at Shelley Point

Our family spent the Christmas holidays on South Africa's West Coast. We visited the lighthouse at Shelley Point on one of those days. These photos are of my husband and me and our two eldest children.
