The Longest Beach at Struisbaai

Struisbaai is a coastal town in the Cape Agulhas district, the southernmost point of the continent of Africa. The beach at Struisbaai is 14 km (almost 9 miles) long, making it the longest beach in the Southern Hemisphere. Since 1673, at least 30 vessels have run aground in the waters off of Struisbaai, indicating how treacherous these waters are for shipping. We visited there in December 2017, but this is my first time sharing these photos.

The Old Fishing Village of Struisbaai

A quaint thatch-roofed church

Struisbaai is an old fishing villlage on the southern coast of South Africa. Many of the newer homes have been built to look like the original thatched fishermen cottages like our holiday rental, Harbour House. You can check out Part 1 and Part 2 if you'd like to see where we stayed. Some of today's photos are of the original buildings.

Harbour House at Struisbaai - Part 2

Our family of 6, along with my mom and step-dad, stayed at a holiday rental called Harbour House in Struisbaai on South Africa's southern coast during December of 2017. If you missed Part 1 and enjoy coastal decor, then you can check out those photos here.

The rental included an outdoor braai (BBQ) area. We went to the local grocery store and purchased a few items for the braai like traditional boerewors (farmer's sausage). We also bought potatoes and that's when I saw the one below that looked like a heart. Outside the shop was this sign about a shipwreck. If you're interested in learning about South African shipwrecks, then check out this site.

Harbour House at Struisbaai - Part 1

My mom and step-dad visited us in South Africa in December 2017. We spent some of that holiday touring wine routes and also took a drive down to Cape Agulhas, the southern tip of Africa. We stayed in Struisbaai near Agulhas for a couple of days and it was one of the highlights of our trip. My step-dad discovered online a privately owned home for holiday makers to rent called Harbour House in Langezandt Fishermen's Village.

The house could sleep up to ten people and we were eight. It had an extra little cottage with a master bedroom and en-suite where my mom and step-dad slept. It also had another bedroom with two single beds and en-suite attached to the main house. Robbie and I stayed in the master bedroom in the main house, Jessica had her own double bed, Jeremiah slept in the loft, and Samantha and Amanda were in the attached room. The lady and man in the photo below took care of the home and property.

I have so many nice photos of our time spent at Harbour House that I'm doing this series in two parts. I'm also sharing a few photos of other houses in the village. All the houses are built to look like the original fishermen's cottages.
