It really makes a difference!

During our kids' June and July winter break, we took them to the Garden Route, along the beautiful south-eastern coast of South Africa. To get there, we had to drive past the little town of Ashton where the bright orange flowers of the deep green aloes lined the road. It's also one of the stops on Route 62, which is fast earning the reputation as the world's longest wine route!

After leaving Ashton, we turned off Route 62 and headed for Swellendam where we got onto the N2 and the Garden Route. We drove past bright yellow canola crops and lush green fields. We were headed to George and the Redberry Farm, the first adventure of our family holiday!

It's a great place to take the family. There's plenty to do from picking strawberries, to walking the maze and more. There's a farm stall for quick refreshments and a coffee shop. You can sit inside or outside and there's a playground to help keep the kids busy while you eat. I highly recommend stopping here to stretch your legs if you're driving past George.

Time For Refreshments

After completing the maze challenge, we got refreshments at the Red Shed Coffee and Berry Bar. The drinks and milkshakes are made with fresh strawberries from the farm.

Train Ride

Amanda rode the train. It took her through a small portion of the maze, around the strawberry field, and through a tunnel.

The Bubble Ball

After the train, she tried the Bubble Ball. We were her audience. Isn't the view at the water spectacular?

We had a blast at the Redberry Farm!

It really makes a difference!

During our kids' June and July winter break, we took them to the Garden Route, along the beautiful south-eastern coast of South Africa. On the trip, we got to experience the Acrobranch outdoor obstacle course in Wilderness. It's a 2-hour adventure of treetop obstacles and zip lines! (If you live in South Africa, be sure to visit the link to find the outdoor activity park nearest you.) We were thankfully allowed to try a mini version of this. It does require a certain amount of fitness. I had muscles aching afterward that I didn't know were there, but we had a blast!

Wayne and his team were great! They were super friendly and helpful. Amanda hurt her finger toward the end of the course and she received first aid back at the shack. Thankfully, it was nothing serious, but it's a good reminder that something can go wrong, especially if you don't listen carefully or forget to follow instructions. Our guide, Ashley, was really funny and he gave us all the time we needed through the practice course.

Simon's Town - Part 3

SA Naval Museum

The SAS Assegaai - S99 is one of three French submarines acquired between 1970 - 1972. These were the first submarines to serve in the South African Navy. The SAS Assegaai (assegaai is the Afrikaans word for 'spear') was finally decommissioned in 2003. Currently, she is preserved as a floating museum. (The link that I included above is a bit outdated, but the page has good photos and information.)

Our tour guide, Malcolm, had been one of the chefs on board the submarine. He mentioned that food was the main thing that helped break up the monotony of days under water and so a lot was expected of the chef on duty - and the kitchen was tiny! Two chefs worked shifts - while one was on, the other was off - from 4 am to midnight every day. Malcolm was really funny and explained life on the submarine very well.
