Road Trip and Picnic - Part 2

Eight of us (our family and my in-laws) went on a road trip to have a picnic lunch at a nature reserve on South Africa's beautiful West Coast. There's a small entrance/conservation fee to the Rocherpan Nature Reserve. It's a coastal reserve teeming with birds and colorful wildflowers. It was established in 1966, and the adjacent section of the Atlantic Ocean was declared a marine reserve in 1988. The protected sand dunes, fynbos (flora), bird life, etc. all contribute to a wild coast experience.

Rocherpan Nature Reserve promotes responsible and sustainable tourism. They utilize low-impact building methods, waterless toilets, and rainwater capture. The eco-cabins and bird hides are also universally accessible.

I was impressed with the steps the nature reserve was taking to ensure responsible tourism. On 22 May is International Biodiversity Day and the theme is sustainable tourism. If you would like to help spread the word for the Secretariat of the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) and the sustainable tourism project, then visit ThunderClap.It. I will share photos of the actual picnic next week. We even saw dolphins in the water and I took photos of them playing in the waves!

Road Trip and Picnic - Part 1

My mother-in-law planned a picnic at a nature reserve on South Africa's beautiful West Coast while were were visiting over the summer holiday. We drove through Velddrif and took the Main Road that goes along the coast up to Rocherpan Nature Reserve.

We passed dry fields with burgundy lichen, white wildflowers and sometimes sheep or cattle. We saw the typical West Coast style homes that are reminiscent of the original fishermen cottages. We stopped on the way at a farm stall and bought wonderful savory pies to have with our picnic. It's called Die Skooltjie Padstal, which means "the little school farm stall," because it used to be a little school.

Fish and Chips on South Africa's West Coast

We always enjoy wonderful food every time we visit my in-laws at Britannia Bay. The fresh fish and chips we bought at the harbor and my mother-in-law made the sides, which consisted of two salads and a sweet potato gratin.

We also had a couple of South African wines, one of them is featured here: Edgebaston Pepper Pot. A traditional South African dish called "potjiekos" (meaning "small pot food") is cooked outside on a three-legged cast-iron pot called a "potjie" like on the wine label. Bosjes Restaurant - Part 3

My Bosjes Restaurant series began with the restaurant and food side of things. Bosjes is, in fact, a farm with luxury suites, a top-notch restaurant and a unique chapel. The chapel's design was inspired by a bird in flight. These photos are mostly of the chapel with a bit of the vineyards and some of the garden paths around the chapel.
