Wine Tasting and Cheese Platter at Stettyn Cellar

Our new favorite wine tasting venue in the Breede Valley wine region is Stettyn Cellar. They have fabulous wines at affordable prices and a generous cheese platter for two. We were five people and two cheese platters were more than enough. This was our second and last stop of the day. We took Samantha wine tasting for her 20th birthday and our first stop was at Aan de Doorns Wine Cellar.

Our wine purchases are featured below. We bought the 2019 Pinotage, 2018 Shiraz, 2019 Merlot, and 2020 Chardonnay/Pinot Noir. In South Africa, the drinking age is 18. Amanda, who is 12, had sparkling grape juice at our first stop and water at our last stop. I was the designated driver, so I didn't participate in the wine tasting but I did have a couple of sips. I held someone else's wine for the photos.

Aan de Doorns Wine Cellar

We took Samantha wine tasting for her 20th birthday. We visited two wine estates in the Worcester area. Aan de Doorns was our first stop. I was the designated driver, so I focused on taking photos while the others did the tasting. In case you are wondering, the drink Amanda is holding was not wine. She got to taste both their red and white sparkling grape juices.

Here are the names of the wines in order of appearance: Vintage 2020 Chenin Blanc, Route 43 Crisp White, Route 43 Fruity White, Vintage 2018 Doornroodt, and Vintage 2019 Shiraz. The last two photos are of the wines that we bought. The photo with the three bottles from left to right are the Vintage 2018 Doornroodt, the Vintage 2020 Chenin Blanc, and the Vintage 2019 Pinotage. The last photo is of the Route 43 Fruity White, which is a semi-sweet Colombard and a favorite white wine of mine. We also bought bottles of the red and white sparkling grape juice, mainly for Amanda. You can enlarge the images by clicking on them to see the labels better.

Last year we celebrated Samantha's birthday at the Spice Route in Paarl. That was another fun outing. Next week I will share photos of our second stop. You definitely won't want to miss it, because I will be featuring our favorite wine tasting venue in the Breede Valley wine region.

Tables Restaurant at Nitida

Last week we had lunch at Tables on the Nitida wine farm in Durbanville, just outside of Cape Town. It was so nice to see our son again. He lives and works in Durbanville Hills. My mother-in-law picked him up on her way through. Ziggy, my in-laws' Miniature Schnauzer, came too. My father-in-law, who made the booking, unfortunately couldn't make it due to work. We had great weather, good food, and friendly helpful staff. The staff wore masks and we had ours with us when inside the restaurant.

The most popular dish ordered was the Tables Gourmet Burger, which looked amazing. I ordered the Herb and Pecorino Crumbed Chicken Parmigiana. The chicken was juicy and tender. It came with linguine, which was also delicious. For dessert, two girls ordered Crème Brûlée and one ordered the Carrot Cake to share. I ordered a Dom Pedro, which is similar to a milkshake, made with vanilla ice cream and alcohol. Mine had Cape Velvet Cream Liqueur in. It was smooth and creamy with that little bit of kick.

The Umbrella Wildflower

Today I'm featuring one of my favorite wildflowers. Its English name is Umbrella and its Latin name is Monsonia speciosa. It belongs to the Geranium family. My friend Werner Voigt, manager at Cape Town's National Botanical Garden, describes them as a charismatic flower in the veld and a drought hardy plant. He collected seeds near us and sent them to Kew Gardens in the UK around 2013. Monsonia speciosa is listed as Endangered.

Most of the wildflowers are now fading, but I still have photos to share and will continue to do so. I also included two photos of a ground orchid, most of which have already turned brown.

All of these photos were taken with my Canon PowerShot. No filters were added.
