Wine Tasting at Jason's Hill

One of the nicest wine estates and bistros in our area is at Jason's Hill in the Slanghoek Valley. The views are spectacular, the wines are exceptional, and the food is wonderful.

Amanda often goes wine tasting with us. Some places are more kid friendly than others and Jason's Hill has a playground and birds in small aviaries to look at. Amanda also enjoyed a hot chocolate in the bistro upstairs while we were downstairs trying a few of the multi-award winning wines by one of South Africa's pioneer female winemakers, Ivy Du Toit.

Slanghoek Valley, Wine Country

Slanghoek Valley is near Rawsonville. It's about an hour's drive from Cape Town and is on the Breedekloof wine route in picturesque wine country. Slanghoek is Afrikaans for "snake corner". I don't know if it's named after snakes in the valley or because the road snakes its way through the valley with mountains on either side.

We took a drive through Slanghoek on Mother's Day. Most of the photos I snapped while Hubby was driving and the scenery was zipping past. The weather was perfect and we even stopped to have a picnic. The picnic photos are posted on Amanda's Books and More, if you want to take a look.

There are two excellent wine estates with spectacular views in Slanghoek. One is called Jason's Hill and the other is Opstal. I will be sharing our latest wine tasting experience at Jason's Hill next week.

Road Trip and Picnic - Part 3

Our road trip through Velddrif and along the coast brought us to our final destination, the Rocherpan Nature Reserve. There is a small entrance/conservation fee to enter the reserve, but well worth the amazing experience. If you want to come for a picnic like we did, then be sure to bring along an umbrella. The sun can get quite hot even with the cool sea breeze.

The Rocherpan Nature Reserve on South Africa's beautiful West Coast is off the beaten track and a hidden gem. We only saw a couple of other people there in passing and it was during the summer holidays when many wonderful locations are buzzing with people.

The picnic was my mother-in-law's idea. She does everything with flair, including making sure we had cold beverages and good food. The savory pies we bought along the way at Die Skooltjie Padstal, a little farm stall outside of Velddrif. Mine is featured below and was a bobotie pie, a traditional South African dish with spiced mince (ground beef). I enjoyed mine with a cold Savanna premium cider and my mother-in-law chose to bring a Graham Beck sparkling wine.
